Peter werd "one-armed Pete" genoemd, vanwege het feit dat hij bij een landbouw machineongeluk een arm heeft verloren.
Fanny and Peter got six children.
Peter Verduin was born in Michigan in 1869 and later moved with his family to northwest Iowa. As a young man he worked in S Dakota and there married Fannie Vedders in 1889 at New Holland. They moved to Chicago where he worked in the Pullman rail car factory. Here were born the daughters Dena and Allie. In 1894 he was back in S Dakota, farming. It was here he lost an arm in a treshing machine accident; that's wy they called him one-armed Pete. Also was born there Peter jr. Soon they moved to north central Iowa where Bess and Henry were born. In the fall of 1905 he came to N Dakota with a group to buy land. He bought the East of section 25 in Greenland Township, Barnes Co. and started to build a house. Having work at home he arranged with a local carpenter to have the house done by March and went back to Iowa. In the spring they left Iowa with good buildings, trees, both shade and fruit and came to a treeless plain and a house that hadn't been touch since he left in the fall. Needless to say, it was hard to convince the wife and family this was progress. He also was one of the organizers of the Reformed Church in Litchville. A son John was born here to complete the family.

Hank was inducted into the army 6 march 1943 at Fort Snelling in Minneapolis. There he volonteered for the paratroopers. His folks were not too happy, but the extra $50 a month sounded pretty good. He was sent to Toccoa Georgia for basic training in the 517 parachute combat team. After basic training he was sent to Fort Benning for two weeks of jump training. After receiving his wings he was sent to Camp McKaal. He had a lot of machine gun training and Tennessee maneuvers; then to Camp Patrick Henry. From there he got on the boat for overseas. He left the States 17 May 1944 and landed in Naples Italy on 31 may. He spent a few weeks on the front lines in Italy. Then on 15 august he jumped into France about 15 miles inland. It was our job to stop the Germans from sending reinforcements to the coastal landing, which we did. After the troops landed and got to us we fought our way up to the coast to the Italian border. From there he went to a camp near Reims North France; from there to the battle of the Bulge and into Germany. When the war ended he had the choice to stay in Europe for occupation or volunteer to go to the Pacific. So of course I volonteered to go to the Pacific with 45 days furlough in the States. The day he got on the boat heading for home they dropped the atomic bomb on Japan. What a party we had on the boat! I got back in the States on 22 august 1945 and got my Honorable Discharge on the 26 October. There were many tough tomes, but I could see God's protecting hand all the way.
Henry started married life in Cal., then moved to a farm in Minn. In 1959 they moved to a larger farm, then in 1969, fire destroyed the barn and cattle, so he went to work for "Land O Lakes" driving a truck. He is now retired and they live in Milaca.

A small history written in 1981 because of a family-reunion.
Onderstaande historie is samengesteld n.a.v. een familie-reunie in 1981.
The house of Vedders from 1834 to 1981.
The family from which this group gathered here at Long Scraggy Camp originated, can trace its origins back as far as Grandpa Hendrik Jan Vedders who was born on April 18 1834 in the town of Ommen in the Province of Overijsel in Holland.
At the age of 32 he emigrated to America where he made his first residence naer Zeeland Michigan. It was there he met his wife-to-be Aaltjen Schoemacker. She was born in Hardenburg also in Overijsel province in Holland on Aug 30 1836 and had lived with an aunt and uncle, herding geeses to pay het way, as her parents had died when she was very young. Later another aunt and uncle moved to America in 1868 taking her with them. However, she had to agree to pay for her passage money which they advanced by working for them in America. It was what was known as indentured servitude and had to be fully paid before she was free to live her own life. In order for grandpa to be able to marry her, he had to pay off the balance of the passage money, which he did and they were married foto09 in Fillmore in Allegan County Michigan on January 28 in 1869. At first they lived in a small log cabin and later built a small house where all of their children, Dena, Fannie, Fred and William were born. The house foto30 still stands and is presently being lived is.
In September the 21st 1877 William Vedders, the youngest of their four children, was born. Before he learned to walk, in the year 1878, they moved by train to Sioux County Iowa and is was on that train ride from Michigan to Iowa that little William began to take his first walk.
Four years later, in 1882, the family moved to Douglas County in South Dakota by wagon and ended up on a farm which they homesteaded near New Holland. Their first home was even more primitive than the log cabin where they started their married life, since there were no trees for lumber, they lived in a sod house which they built from the sod cut from the grassy prairie land. After a few years in the sod house they were able to buy lumber and build a frame house of which we have pictures foto31 here today. Life was hard on the South Dakota prairies. Wood was not available, so the only fuel to heat the house was corn-cobs and buffalo chips. This and the hard life of a prairie farmer took its toll on human life and Hendrik Jan Vedders lived only five years there dying of pneumonia on March 1 1887.
By this time Dena and Fannie were both married but Fred was only 12 years old and William only nine. It was a harder life still for all the farm work fell on the two boys and all the equipment was horse-and hand-powered. They managed to keep going for nine long hard years. Dad would earn extra money by breaking horses for the neighbours and the pay was $ 5,- per horse, tough exhausting dangerous work for a youngster, but the money was badly needed and Dad loved the riding and the excitement of taming the horses to ride. To add to the already hard struggle they had the long dry spells came and the wells dried up and they had to haul all of their water, including water for the cattle, from a well ten miles away, by wagon. One cold stormy evening Dad had come home with his load, tired and chilled to the bone, only to discover that the bung had come loose in the tank and practically all the water was gone, a miserable 20 mile trip for nothing, and still no water for the first cattle. After eating a quick meal he turned around and made the trip through the dark for another load, getting home early in the morning. When your job seems tough, think about that. And he was only about 15 years old at the time. About the bottom of their bad times a Dutch land-agent from Pease Minnesota came to South Dakota and told the Dutch community around New Holland about the wonderful land in Minnesota, where there were trees and water enough for anyone. It convinced a number of families, among them the Hubers, Timmers and Vedders, that it was time to get out of South Dakota, so they placed their cattle and their small amount of goods and families on a train and left for Minnesota. Their bad luck was not quite over yet as the train broke down east of St. Cloud at a small station then known as Parent near Foley, no longer even a place on the map. They had to buy extra hay for the cattle there, but they finally made it to Pease where the Brinks family, who had gone on ahead, was there to welcome them.
At first grandma Vedders, uncle Fred and Dad lived in a small house on the west bank of the West Branch of the Rum River and later built another very modest home near where the present farm house stands. The first house was near the old road that run along the river from Foreston to Princeton. It was while living in the little house by the river bank that grandma Vedders was alone one day when a big Indian came to the door. Since he spoke no English he motioned to his mouth and grandma guessed he was hungry ans so she was badly frightened, pointed to a chair and he sat while she made him a bowl of bread and milk. He ate and quietly went away, coming back after many months to see how the family was.
Uncle Fred married Alice Hubers and they moved just up the road about one-fourth of a mile, where they built a log cabin foto32 to live in just as great-grandpa Vedders had started his married life.
On December 26 1901 dad married Cena Timmer. She died of pneumonia on June 17 1902.
Grandpa Kuperus married Jeltjia Wynia on May 15 1874 in Friesland The Netherlands. They came to America in 1884 when their daughter Jennie (Jeltje) was only three years old and lived near Rock Valley Iowa, untill they moved to Pease in 1901.
William Vedders and Jennie Kuperus were married October 1 1903 in Pease foto33 Minnesota. Their first child, a girl was still-born and the third child, a son died of pneumonia at the age of six months. All the other eight children born to them are alive and here today (1981) by the grace of God.
In 1917, with lumber made from trees on the farm, Dad built a new two-store four-bedroom home foto34 that stands today on the farm where they first lived and is still occupied by a Vedders family member today. All of the children raised on the farm, went to school in a covered wagon when they started going to the Christian school in Pease. Dad, uncle Fred and a neighbour, Mr. Walburg, built the wagon which became known by all the people along the way to school as the "music box" because of all the singing along the way to and from school. The life on the farm in the big new house was a lot of fun for all even though everyone had to work hard. All of us here are thankfull for the parents we had and the many memories we share together and are grateful to God for His blessings on our family.
